Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy

1. Introduction and Scope
The Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics (JND) recognizes the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in scholarly writing and publishing. This policy provides clear guidance on the ethical, responsible, and transparent use of AI tools in manuscript preparation and submission.
The policy applies to all manuscript types submitted to JND, including:
- Original research articles
- Review articles
- Case studies and case reports
- Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
- Brief communications
JND adopts internationally accepted publication ethics standards, including those of COPE, to safeguard academic integrity, originality, and author accountability.
2. Guiding Principles
- Scholarly work must remain the product of human intellectual effort
- Authors bear full responsibility for accuracy and integrity
- AI tools must not replace scientific judgment or ethical accountability
AI technologies may assist with language clarity only and must not influence scientific content.
3. Permitted Use of AI Tools
AI-assisted tools may be used exclusively for language and grammar editing.
- Grammar, spelling, and punctuation correction
- Sentence restructuring for clarity
- Stylistic refinement without altering scientific meaning
Approved Language-Editing Tools:
- Grammarly
- Hemingway Editor
- PaperPal
No other AI tools are allowed for manuscript preparation.
4. Prohibited Use of AI Tools
- Generating scientific content or interpretations
- Writing abstracts, methods, results, or conclusions
- Conducting or interpreting statistical analyses
- Creating or modifying research data
- Generating tables, figures, graphs, or images
- Fabricating references or citations
- Paraphrasing to conceal plagiarism
Use of generative AI tools for these purposes is strictly prohibited.
5. Authorship and Responsibility
- AI tools cannot be listed as authors
- Authors remain responsible for originality and accuracy
- Authors must verify all data, references, and conclusions
- AI use does not reduce author accountability
6. Disclosure of AI Use
Use of approved language-editing tools does not require disclosure if used solely for grammar refinement. Any detected generative AI use may result in editorial review or rejection.
7. Abstract Policy
Abstracts must be written entirely by the authors. AI-generated or AI-assisted content is not permitted.
8. Reviewers and Editors
- Manuscripts must not be uploaded into AI tools
- AI may improve reviewer comment clarity only
9. Editorial Oversight and Enforcement
- Clarification may be requested
- Revisions may be required
- Rejection or retraction may occur
10. Non-Compliance
- Revision requests

11. Policy Review
This policy will be reviewed periodically to reflect evolving best practices and advances in AI technology.
